Empowering women through photography

Lensational is a non-profit social enterprise with the mission of equipping women in the developing world with digital cameras and photography training. Through photography and storytelling, these women now have a voice, a source of income, and a base of strength. We believe that photography can empower women in the following ways:

Emotional Empowerment: Gaining access to cameras gives women a new way to express themselves freely, to improve confidence and to retain memories. Therapeutic photography is also a proven counselling technique used by psychologists to overcome social isolation.

Economic Empowerment: Our participants will receive 50% of the revenue once their photographs are sold via Lensational. With photography and digital skills, they can also pursue freelance photography opportunities locally.

Since March 2013, Lensational has provided photography training and ongoing support to over 600 marginalised women across 15 culturally and geographically diverse localities: Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Kenya, Bhutan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Ghana, Russia, Singapore and Hong Kong. All our programmes have been delivered through the dedication of over 100 volunteers across the globe.

The women’s photographs and stories have reached over a million on social media, and featured in international conferences in 11 countries, most prominently at the Clinton Global Initiative, presented by President Bill Clinton in New York in September 2016. Their stories have also been featured by global media outlets including Huffington Post, The Guardian, TEDx and ABC News.
