Find out more about Karl Johansson
Karl, where are you from and where do you live now?
I’m from Falun, Sweden, now living in Stockholm since 2009 (via Uppsala, Luleå, Perugia and Rome).
How would you describe your artistic style?
I love movies so I like my photos to be movie-like or dream-like. I don’t like the ”obviously beautiful” but try to look for that image that says something more. A great way to find it is - to just turn around every now and again.
What's on top of your bucket list (as an artist or just as a person)?
As an artist I need to go to Asia’s great cities: Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong. As a person? Raise a great son (and get better at surfing).
Analogue or digital?
My photos are digital (lthough I do abstract painting as well).
New York or remote mountain hut?
Los Angeles.
Becks or Merlot?
Oh, it depends! Becks in the summer in my back yard and Merlot when cooking a great dinner.
And a little Proust: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
When my son and wife are happy, everyone around us is happy and we spend time together. At the same time, happiness can also be as simple as just getting a great photo and then working on it ’til 3 in the morning.
Which living person do you most admire?
Can’t think of anyone in particular. I should probably admire someone, huh?
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Getting up early in the morning (do you have farm animals to tend to...?).
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My wife and cinema.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
Slim Aarons.
The world needs more...
freedom.
I’ve changed my mind about…
almost everything.
What most people don't understand is that…
breakfast is NOT the most important meal of the day.
For each art print you buy, Karl Johansson and Photocircle plant trees in Ethiopia.
